Laura has been an attorney for over 26 years. She has experience in a wide variety of legal areas including family law, criminal law, civil proceedings, administrative hearings, and worker's compensation.
Laura was one of three applicants chosen by the Carroll County Trial Courts Nominating Commission after a thorough and comprehensive investigation and interview process that included various State Bar Associations and the Carroll County Bar Association. The judicial nominating committee evaluated the applicants and submitted the three best qualified candidates to Governor Hogan for consideration for the position of Judge of the Circuit Court for Carroll County.
Laura is a former Maryland State Bar Association Leadership Academy Fellow. She was a law clerk to the Honorable Luke K. Burns, Jr., Judge of the Circuit Court for Carroll County. She received her B.A. from San Diego State University in Political Science and Journalism. She received an International Rotary Foundation Scholarship to study abroad in a Master's program in International Law & Politics. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of San Diego School of Law.
Laura has spent the past 23 years working in Carroll County. She is a trial attorney who has tried cases in the District and Circuit Courts and has successfully argued before the Court of Special Appeals.
Having grown up in a household with limited financial means, she has dedicated her law practice to helping people effectively access the justice system and has donated thousands of hours assisting those unable to afford expensive legal fees.
Laura has also engaged in community outreach giving presentations on how individuals can represent themselves in traffic and family law cases. She regularly conducts talks on appropriate interactions with police during traffic stops for the safety of the officer and the driver.
Laura has worked tirelessly to reduce crime rates by assisting individuals in obtaining drug and alcohol addictions treatment and mental health treatment. She is a great champion of the recovery community donating her time to assist individuals in recovery to reestablish and maintain healthy relationships with their children and other family members in an effort to break the cycle of addiction and poverty.
Laura's father was a Navy veteran who served in World War II and survived imprisonment in a POW camp in the south Pacific. Laura's mother is a native of Mexico who migrated legally to the United States and has been a United States citizen for over 41 years. She has four brothers and one sister.
Laura's son was born and raised in Carroll County. He is a recent graduate of Westminster High School and is currently studying for his bachelor degree with a dual major in economics and sociocultural anthropology.
Laura is running for Judge of the Circuit Court because she believes in our system of justice and protecting the constitutional rights of all individuals. Her life experiences have instilled in her a love and respect for the law. She understands that for the legal system to be a true pillar of our society, as our founding fathers intended, it must be fair and just to all. Her experience and integrity truly make her the best candidate for Judge of the Circuit Court!
